A person (if eligible) may apply in the approved form (with supporting documentation) to the government for a first home owner grant. Current eligible transactions relate to new homes only (and the consideration must not equal or exceed $750,000). The amount of the grant is set out in section 20; see also section 25E of the Act.

Reason for law

To encourage and help home ownership, and to offset the effect of the GST on home ownership, by establishing a scheme for the payment of grants to first home owners. (Long title of Act)
